Felt vs. Straw: Choosing Your Material

Fur felt for the cold and the dress occasion; straw for the heat and the long day outdoors. How to pick.

Felt vs. Straw: Choosing Your Material

Felt vs. Straw

The first material decision splits cleanly: felt or straw. Both can be beautiful. They simply belong to different seasons and different jobs.

Fur Felt

Felt is made from pressed animal fur — most often beaver and rabbit. It is warm, water-resistant, and holds a crease crisply for years. Felt is the choice for fall, winter, and any time you want a dressier finish.

Felt is graded in Xs. More Xs means a higher fur content and a finer, more durable hat.

Straw

Straw is woven from natural fibers and breathes beautifully in heat. It is the summer working hat — light, ventilated, and forgiving. A tighter weave means a finer, longer-lasting straw.

The Simple Rule

If you mostly need a hat from spring through summer and you are outdoors, choose straw. If you want a year-round or dress hat that holds its shape, choose felt. Many people who wear hats daily end up owning one of each.
