The Anatomy of a Cowboy Hat
Before you can choose the right hat, it helps to speak the language. Every cowboy hat is built from the same handful of parts — and each one changes how the hat looks, fits, and wears.
The Crown
The crown is the raised portion that sits over the top of your head. Its height and shape set the entire character of the hat. A tall crown reads formal and dramatic; a shorter crown reads modern and easy.
The Crease
The crease is the fold pressed into the crown. This is where a hat earns its name — Cattleman, Diamond, Gus, Teardrop. The crease is the single most expressive decision you will make.
The Brim
The brim is the flat band of felt or straw extending out from the base of the crown. Width and curl (the upward or downward roll of the edges) determine how the hat frames your face and how much sun it keeps off.
The Hat Band
The band wraps the base of the crown. Leather, horsehair, or ribbon — it is the jewelry of the hat, and the easiest way to make a classic shape your own.
The Sweatband
Hidden inside, the sweatband is the leather strip that meets your forehead. A good sweatband is the difference between a hat you tolerate and a hat you forget you are wearing.
Putting It Together
When you build with us, every one of these parts is a deliberate choice — shaped to one head, yours.
